Exploring engineering apprenticeships: TUI

We recently spoke to the Apprenticeships team at TUI to find out more about what opportunities exist for aspiring engineers within the company, what their apprenticeships consist of, and the benefits of working for TUI.

Could you tell us a little bit about the Apprenticeship programme(s) that you have on offer at TUI, particularly for Engineers?

We offer over 28 different apprenticeship programmes at TUI, ranging from level 3 travel consultant to level 7 research scientist.

For our engineers they can complete their level 3 CAT A certifying mechanic and their level 4 CAT A or CAT B certifying technician. They also can complete a team leading or management apprenticeship if they move into a suitable role following their apprenticeship.

As a fully qualified engineer, you’ll be involved in heavy maintenance of our fleet of 130 Boeing aircraft. TUI Airline operates Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 737-800 and 737 MAX, and if successful you’ll be qualified to work on some of the highest tech aircraft currently in operation. Your expertise will ensure the safe and reliable operation of our fleet, ensuring customers live happy on their next TUI holiday.

How long do your apprenticeship programmes last, and what qualifications would an apprentice receive upon completing the course?

Our apprenticeships last 2 to 6 years depending on the programme.

For our new school leaver engineers, we offer a 4-year apprenticeship where they will undertake their level 3 CAT A certifying mechanic and then progress onto their level 4 CAT A or CAT B certifying technician. The course is delivered through both classroom delivery and hands-on experience within our hangar.

How often do you take on new cohorts, and how many apprentices do you accept?

We take on new cohorts once a year, applications open in Sept/Oct to start in the following year. The number of apprentices we take on depends on the needs of the business; for 2023 we have 10 apprenticeship roles within Engineering.

What is the application process like?

Applicants will complete an online eligibility assessment and a digital interview. If they are successful, they will be invited to an assessment day at our training provider’s site. They will then complete a face-to-face interview, a sheet metal activity, and a test.

What are some of the biggest benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship at TUI?

With our engineering apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to rotate around different areas of the hangar, you will be able to build a vast skill set when it comes to aircraft engineering. You will have a dedicated mentor and learn directly from our very experienced engineers.

We also have great benefits on offer when working for TUI, such as:

  • Fantastic holiday benefits including discounts, special offers and the ability to purchase additional ‘TUI time off’
  • Health and Wellbeing support in five key areas – Financial, Health, Social, Community and Career
  • Excellent rates with foreign exchange
  • Pension scheme and life assurance

What career opportunities exist within the company for those who have completed an apprenticeship with you?

There are numerous career opportunities for those that have completed an apprenticeship. All our apprentices are offered permanent positions on completion and there are always opportunities to progress higher in your role, should that be to a team leader or management position. If you fancy a career change there are various roles in head office which they can apply for, with hybrid working now in place, it’s even easier to move into a head office role.

What are TUI’s main goals for the future in terms of bringing in new talent to the aviation industry?

It is important with the fast paced and ever-changing environment of the aviation sector that we continue to bring in new talent to the business, their enthusiasm and skills set will help TUI to develop and grow and continue to thrive in the sector. At TUI we want our new apprentices to inspire, grow and believe in the talent of today for the TUI of tomorrow.

What advice would you give to any aspiring engineers who may be considering an apprenticeship?

Absolutely take the opportunity! Being able to earn whilst gaining a qualification that will set your career on the right track is invaluable, the skills and techniques you will learn along the way will set you up to enjoy long and successful aircraft maintenance engineering jobs. You will get the opportunity to work alongside and learn from industry experts who have worked in the aviation sector for over 20 years.
