In the fast-paced world of aviation, the role of an Aircraft Maintenance Team Leader is both dynamic and demanding. Amy takes us behind the scenes to share her journey, from starting her career in avionics maintenance to leading a team at one of the country’s busiest airports. Discover what it’s like to coordinate complex operations, solve challenges on the fly, and thrive in a role where no two days are ever the same.
How long have you been working in the aviation industry?
I graduated from the Avionics Aircraft Maintenance Engineer program in 2011. My first job was with Viking Air in Calgary; from there I went on to Jazz I Halifax, working heavy maintenance and then finally started with Air Canada in 2017.
What made you choose to pursue a career in the aviation industry?
After graduating from University with a BA in psychology, I decided I wanted a hands on career. I have family who are also in aviation (one uncle who is a pilot and another who is an AME) so I decided to follow their path.
What path have you taken to embark on an aviation career?
I finished my college degree and basically applied to over 50 different jobs. This was during a time when it was hard to get into the industry. Once I received a call back, I uprooted my life in the East coast and moved over to the West coast.
Give us an overview of what you do on an average day in your role.
I work in line maintenance out of the YVR airport for Air Canada. I work either in the hangar or on the ramp. An average day consists of coming in and getting a debrief on what aircraft we have that are AOG (Aircraft On Ground) or what is coming in for an LMV (Line Maintenance Visit) from there, I coordinate manpower as needed. After that my job is to keep an eye on the operation and help “put fires out” wherever they occur.
What do you most love about your job?
The thing I love most about my job and in aviation in general is how dynamic the industry and job is. There is always something new and different going on every day. I learn something new almost every day and I get to interact with numerous people/roles. The pressure in some situations is where I like to step up and find solutions that are sometimes outside the box.
What are your goals for the future?
My goals for the future are to climb as far up the management ladder as I can. Operations Manager would be the next step and from there, a Director role is in my sights!
