Singapore Airlines has announced that it is to launch the world’s longest commercial flight in October this year.
The route will be launched on 11 October and will fly between Singapore and Newark Liberty International Airport. Passengers will cover around 9,500 miles and the service will be offered daily from 18 October.
The aircraft used for the route will be Airbus’ new A350-900ULR (ultra long range) and they will cover the distance in approximately 18 hours and 45 minutes. The aircraft will have a two-class layout, featuring 94 premium economy seats and 67 business class seats. Singapore Airlines is Airbus’ first customer for the A350-900ULR, the first of which is scheduled for delivery in September.
Singapore Airlines previously offered a Singapore-New York route in 2013, however, the service was suspended. The new aircraft have better fuel economy and offers a more comfortable experience for passengers with higher ceilings and larger windows. Lighting designed to reduce jet lag will also be installed.
The longest commercial flight currently operating is the 9,025 mile Auckland – Doha route operated by Qatar Airways. Qantas launched its 9,000 mile London-Perth route earlier this year.
