Love at First Sight: Jerome and Robin

The Beginnings of Your Story

Q1. How did you two meet, and was it "love at first flight"?

We first meet each other during our military service and started dating when we completed it. We wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but we knew from the beginning that we have a special bond.

Q2. Was there a specific moment or experience that made you realise you had a special connection?

On our first dates, which we spent with plane-spotting, we realised, that we could talk for hours about planes and procedures at the airport.

Q3. How did working together in aviation influence the early stages of your relationship?

Only Robin worked in the aviation industry during the early stages of our relationship. Jérôme joined during a later stage.

Balancing Work and Relationship

Q1. Aviation can be a demanding field with unusual hours. How do you both manage the challenges of balancing your work schedules with your personal lives?

Indeed, we do have some months with rosters where we hardly ever see each other. However, we take time for ourselves whenever possible and meet family and friends together, go to the gym or eat out. With a little time management we always find a matching solution for the two of us.

Q2. Do you find it challenging to separate “work talk” from personal time, or does it bring you closer?

It is very challenging and needs a lot of discipline, but on the other hand we enjoy it very much to talk about our passion which we were able to make to our professions.

Q3. What are the perks and challenges of being in a relationship where you both understand the demands of each other’s roles?

We only see perks that both of us understand the demands of the other‘s professional role. Demanding job-related situations can be discussed with each other knowing the other knows what can be on stake. It is fair to say, that the understanding is bigger than with non-aviation related partners.

Professional Growth Together

Q1. Has working in the same industry influenced each other’s professional growth or career decisions?

From the beginning of our relationship, we both knew that we want to work in the industry. For now, we see us still at the beginning of our careers. And of course, we always encourage one-another to take a possible next step.

Q2. Are there any career milestones you’ve shared that were especially meaningful because you could celebrate them together?

One of the most memorable milestones for sure was the successful initial Linecheck of Jérôme and seeing all the hard work paying off. Or Robins promotion to Shiftleader CrewControl after only short time on the job.

Q3. How do you support each other’s goals in aviation? Are there any aspirations or future roles you’re both excited about?

We talk to each other frequently and openly about our dreams and desires. Whenever possible we encourage each other to take the next step. On the other hand we are able to be a voice of reason.

Memorable Moments in Aviation

Q1. Do you have any memorable flights or on-the-job experiences that you’ve shared?

The most memorable flight as a couple was for sure the first flight with both of us working as crew member. It was a very surreal moment since we have been working towards it for a very long time.

Q2. Have you ever been on a flight or in a situation where one of you had to assist the other in a professional capacity? How did that play out?

Luckily we have not been in such a situation yet, and hopefully it will stay like that for a long time.

Teamwork and Understanding

Q1. How has working in the same industry helped you understand and empathise with each other’s day-to-day challenges?

As mentioned before, since we work for the same company and both in the operations environment, we see each others challenges. This recognition helps us to address each other in an appropriate and emphasising manner.

Q2. Have you ever had to work as a team during a flight or project? If so, how did it affect your relationship?

Working together on rotations is a big enrichment for a relationship. We can create memories together.  And layovers together even feel like a very short city trip as a couple.

Advice for Other Aviation Couples

Q1. What advice would you give to other couples who are in the aviation industry or who work together?

Our biggest advice for all aviation couples out there is: Talk to each other, talk about your feelings, your hopes and fears. If you have a caring partner your relationship will grow.

Q2. Are there any strategies you’ve found for making the most of the time you get to spend together, given the travel and scheduling demands?

Have a certain plan or idea what you could do during the time you get to spend together. I.e. Going on a short trip, to the gym together or watch a movie is always a good idea.

Q3. How do you keep the relationship exciting despite the unique challenges of aviation careers?

We would say we keep our relationship exciting not despite the unique challenges but thanks to the unique challenges. It is exciting when one of us can accompany the other on a layover or bring home souvenirs from a foreign destination.
