The Aircraft Mechanic assigned to this position is responsible for the Aircraft Mechanic Lead for performing duties as assigned. Frequently exercises independent judgment and possesses abilities sufficient to supervise a crew of aircraft mechanics. Work is performed under minimum supervision, and the employee consults with a supervisor only for the initial job assignment and where departures from standard practices are involved. This position is eligible for a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) stipend and separate supplemental compensation based on the employee’s endorsements and/or certifications.

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following duties. Additional essential functions may be identified by the organization and listed as such in the incumbent's performance appraisal elements. Various tasks may be assigned under each essential function. Those that are listed under the examples of work are not all-inclusive; they are examples only and may be amended or added to as needed by the organization.

  • Service, inspect, and repair aircraft in accordance with manufacturer’s data and 14 CFR Part 91 and 43
  • Reads, interprets, and complies with technical data including Service Instructions, Bulletins, and Airworthiness Directives as directed by the manufacturer or Airworthiness Authority
  • Troubleshoot system malfunctions; perform necessary corrective action on electrical systems, engines, fuel systems, and all other related aircraft systems
  • Contact OEM, technical representatives, and suppliers for technical assistance
  • Repairs and replaces, aircraft structures and functional components
  • Services and repairs aircraft and aircraft engines to ensure airworthiness
  • Removes and replaces defective components, adjusts and rigs systems as required
  • Services engines and airframe components on the active flight line to keep aircraft in safe operating condition
  • Records maintenance actions on aircraft, engine, component records, forms, tags, and other applicable documents according to company and Airworthiness Authority requirements.
  • May perform ATR Aircraft Crew Chief and Flight Attendant duties to include but not limited to:
  • Aircraft cargo/passenger configuration changes
  • Aircraft and service lavatory cleaning
  • Aircraft fueling
  • Loading, securing, and unloading cargo
  • Performs preventive maintenance and servicing for assigned Ground Support Equipment
  • Performs related duties as required including flying on maintenance functional check flights
  • Able to work any assigned shift or schedule, including mission support outside normal duty hours and travel as required to support mission requirements
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • The incumbent performs other job-related tasks as assigned and required; any duties/tasks included in the employee's performance evaluation elements are essential to that employee's position within the job classification.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required; two-year technical trade school, military experience, or equivalent on-the-job training is required
  • Must hold a valid Airframe & Powerplant certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  • Inspector Authorization (IA) is preferred
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience as an A&P mechanic on small to medium fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft
  • Experience shall be in a similar position within the last twelve (12) months.

KNOWLESGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

The following are required:

  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance support for various fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft (e.g., Cessna 206 & 208, Beechcraft King Air airplanes, and Bell 407/412 helicopters)
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance support for medium cargo/commuter-type aircraft (e.g., ATR 42, ATR 72 or Dash 8)
  • Have tools required to complete a variety of maintenance tasks on aircraft listed in the above paragraphs   
  • Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to retain information and make decisions according to standard policies and procedures
  • Ability to determine work methods to accomplish assignments
  • Working knowledge of applicable FAA Federal Aviation Regulations
  • Ability to make proper entries in aircraft logs and records
  • Obtain a DOJ Security Clearance as required
  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Maintain a valid US Passport and the appropriate vaccinations required for international travel.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee works in an aircraft hangar the majority of the shift and is required to stand; walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms as well as push and pull items. The employee must able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Normal day to day working conditions are inside an aircraft hangar with good ventilation and airflow. Work may be regularly required in outside weather conditions where the employee will be exposed to all types of environmental conditions and extremes such as hot, cold, rain, wind, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is required to wear personal protective equipment including eye protection, ear protection, hand protection, respirators, masks, aprons, leather safety shoes, steel toe shoes, fall protection harness, and other equipment anytime the potential for hazards exist. The employee is occasionally exposed to highly precarious places, confined spaces, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of radiation; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
