Airport Fire Captain - Suppression

Description

The Airport Fire Captain - Suppression supervises and directs the activities of a crew of Airport fire personnel assigned to the Airport’s fire station to maintain a state of readiness for response to fire, medical, hazardous materials, and/or other emergency situations on an assigned shift.

The Airport Fire Captain - Suppression is a supervisory level class within the series. The incumbent receives general instruction from the Battalion Chief and is responsible for supervising firefighting and rescue operations related to aircraft incidents, fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous materials, and other emergency management, fire inspections, fire investigations, and training activities. In addition, the Airport Fire Captain is responsible for ensuring duties are performed in a safe and prudent manner to best protect life and property.

Examples of Essential Functions

• Responds to all alarms in an assigned district and other districts as directed; takes command at emergency incidents and gives assignments to incoming resources; requests upgrades as necessary.
• Responds to calls for service; works with outside agencies to provide EMS service in the area; works with local EMS agencies, law enforcement agencies, and other professional entities to maintain the protection of the constituents of the City.
• Develop fire attack and aircraft rescue firefighting plans. 
• Review plans on airport structures requiring necessary approval.
• Inspect aircraft refueling vehicles and storage areas in accordance with NFPA and FAA directives.
• Ensure compliance with all City of Reno Fire Department policies, procedures, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
• Supervises and participates in the laying of hose, placing of ladders, controlling the pressure and direction of water streams, rescue, and salvage operations.
• Directs the routing and placement of apparatus at emergency scenes.
• Oversees daily operations of the fire station; coordinates daily crew assignments including cleaning, maintenance, and supply ordering; supervises maintenance of station and equipment.
• Coordinates and oversees training and mentorship, public outreach, hazard planning, and mitigation; maintains training documentations for assigned crew; ensure training is completed by crews in the station.
• Prepares and maintains budget information at the company/station level.
• Enforces policy and procedure at the company level; monitors the health wellbeing of the crew; oversees the safety of the crews and ensures alignment to designated safe methods and practices.
• Proposes and drafts changes in policy and procedure; analyzes and evaluates current policy and procedure for effectiveness, alignment to regulations, and opportunities for improvement.
• Performs administrative tasks related to the station; compiles and submits supply orders; maintains accurate and complete files and records; drafts, coordinates, and submits detailed reports to superiors.
• Resolves personnel issues that arise within the station and with crews; works to maintain crew cohesion, professionalism, and high levels of morale.
• Performs other duties as required.
