General Nature of Work

Gilmer County is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to lead and manage the operations of our public-use airport. The Airport Manager will ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Aviation guidelines, and implement best practices to maintain safety, operational efficiency, and fiscal responsibility.

The Airport Operates with a 3,507ft runway and maintains two hangars with twelve tie-downs and provides 100LL AGAS fueling services to the General Aviation Community.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct daily airfield inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations and report any deficiencies or hazards
  • Maintain airfield security by ensuring all access points are secure and providing escorts as needed
  • Coordinate and monitor construction projects to ensure they are completed on schedule and within budget
  • Represent airport management in emergency situations and serve as liaison with responding agencies
  • Monitor weather conditions and provide severe weather notifications to tenants and staff

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Occasional travel to attend Georgia Association of Airports events and training.
  • Responds to Airport Emergencies and handles FAA and NTSB reporting requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

  • Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Thorough knowledge of FAA regulations, advisory circulars, and GDOT Aviation standards. Understanding of Aviation Fueling regulations, safety, and ordering procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and airport management software.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Financial Aptitude: Proficiency in budgeting, financial analysis, and grant application processes.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well-established procedures or sequences.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50-100 pounds).

Work Environment: This position requires on-site presence, with the possibility of evening and/or weekend duties. Ability to work in outdoor environments, including airfield areas, during varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Airport Operations, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field of study is preferred
  • Experience in public-use airport operations, including familiarity with FAA and GDOT regulatory compliance, 3 years preferred.
  • Accredited Airport Executive (AAE) or Certified Member (CM) designation from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) is strongly preferred, or able to obtain certification within 18 months of hiring.
  • Private pilot license or aviation-related certifications are a plus.
  • Certified FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot and related certifications are a plus.
  • Pilot's license is a significant plus, but not required
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for interacting with airport tenants, state and federal authorities, and other organizations
  • A valid Georgia Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required
  • This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and distractions
  • The employee must be able to manage conflicting priorities and associated stress, as well as work effectively in a team environment
