Patrols and supervises the airport facilities, grounds, and staff to ensures the protection and safety of airport customers; responds to emergency firefighting rescue or police assistance calls to protect life and property; monitors the weather and runway surface conditions on a regular basis and in accordance with established policies and procedures; informs supervisory personnel of situations threatening life or property.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Plans, supervises, coordinates, and monitors the activities of the Airport Police services; plans, schedules, and assigns work; instructs and trains employees in proper methods and procedures; checks and approves work in progress and upon completion; makes recommendations regarding employee job performance and conducts performance evaluations; makes hiring recommendations to department director; recommends salary adjustments; ensures the smooth day-to-day operations of the Airport Police.
- Ensures the provision of police protection and law enforcement for City property and any resources located at the Laredo International Airport complex.
- Monitors and ensures the controlled access to the ramp area and compliance with internal controls to prevent pilferage or damage to City property.
- Prevents unauthorized entry to personnel; detains or arrests violators and releases them to the proper agencies for disposition; prepares forms and reports as required; prepares incident and traffic tickets.
- Coordinates routine and specific security activities with different law enforcement agencies.
- Investigates and takes appropriate action on citizen complaints.
- Insures LEO (law enforcement officer) presence in the terminal area for arriving and departing planes; performs foot patrol in high value areas, U.S. Customs office, Airport Industrial Park buildings, and other high priority resources.
- Responds to radio or telephone messages and instructions concerning incidents, events and complaints.
- Informs appropriate personnel of activities occurring in assigned shift to ensure the following shift is well aware of events and equipped to respond and manage the same.
- Participates in training programs to maintain proficiency with all officers within the department.
- Responds to calls for assistance and support within the airport area.
- Coordinates routine and specific security activities with different law enforcement agencies.
- Follows written and/or oral directives, orders, pass on, and oral instruction; conducts periodic spot checks of assigned areas.
- Applies independent judgment and initiates necessary action to protect property, injury, and loss of life.
- Prepares time and attendance reports for each officer on a bi-weekly basis; orders supplies and equipment as needed.
- Conducts runway lights and surface checks in case of emergency.
- Responds to aircraft emergencies by providing crash, fire and rescue assistance to Laredo Fire Department.
- Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Business Administration, or related field.
At least two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, which includes one (1) year of experience in a supervisory level in law enforcement or business.
Valid Licenses and Certifications
Required Licenses or Certifications
Valid Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is required.
Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Desirable Licenses or Certifications
Firearms Instructor Certification desirable.
National Weather Service Certification desirable.
Adult CPR and First Aid Certification desirable.
Selected applicant must undergo a 10-year Federal background check to be conducted by the Airport Department in order to verify that the individual meets federal standards to obtain an airport security clearance, which is an essential tool to perform required duties.
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
