General Description and Classification Standards:
The City of Atlanta, Facilities Maintenance Division, is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Safety Supervisor to oversee and ensure the safety and well-being of all employees on-site. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in a safety role, with a strong background in creating, implementing, and monitoring safety programs. This position requires a proactive individual who can foster a culture of safety, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
 
Positions at this level would typically lead a unit that has a unique or distinctive function; or leads a group with highly technical or sensitive responsibilities. Classification should be based on job content and the specific supervisory responsibilities.
 
Supervision Received:
Normally receives guidance regarding overall mission, short-term and mid-term objectives, scheduling, unusual priorities, etc. but is free to set work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc. This position reports directly to the Training Director.

 


Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Safety Management: Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies, procedures, and programs to ensure a safe working environment.
• Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, etc.) and industry standards.
• Training & Education: Conduct regular safety training and awareness programs for employees at all levels, ensuring all team members are equipped with the knowledge to work safely.
• Inspections & Audits: Perform regular safety inspections, risk assessments, and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into accidents, injuries, or near-misses, determining root causes, and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Safety Reporting: Prepare and maintain accurate safety reports, logs, and records, including incident reports and compliance documents.
• Safety Equipment Management: Ensure proper maintenance and availability of all personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety tools.
• Emergency Response: Develop, implement, and oversee emergency response protocols and procedures, including evacuation plans, first-aid training, and drills.
• Continuous Improvement: Actively contributes to the continuous improvement of safety processes, suggesting improvements and innovations to enhance workplace safety.
• Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks.
• May make purchasing or resource allocation decisions within organization guidelines.
• Applies organizational policies.
• May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions.
• May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of testing methods.
• Strong verbal, written and presentation skills.
• Strong planning and organizational skills.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills.
• Familiarity with safety management software and tools, including incident reporting, risk assessment, compliance management, training and certification tracking, inspections, and hazard analysis platforms.

 


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science or related field (Additional professional years of experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis)
  • At least 5 years of experience in safety management or supervisory role, preferably in [industry-specific field, e.g., manufacturing, construction, etc.].
Licensures and Certifications 
OSHA 30-Hour Certification (preferred); additional certifications (e.g., First Aid/CPR, HAZWOPER, etc.) preferred.
 
Work Environment:
Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions associated with job.
Will be required to spend time on-site, conducting safety inspections and training sessions.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, if necessary, to accommodate training or emergencies.
 
Lifting Requirements:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
