As the aviation manager 14, you would be responsible for:

  • Ensuring data collected for aviation facilities are coordinated and completed in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration Order 5010.4, the Michigan Aeronautics Code, and the Michigan Aeronautics Commission Rules, including aviation facility licensing standards.
  • Provide direction and oversight to staff activities and practices, determine best practices and ensure sharing of these best practices across the state.
  • Identify new methodologies and capitalize on new technology to implement data-driven inspection procedures.
  • Utilize expertise to review escalated airport, heliport, helistop and flight school inspection findings determined by aviation specialists.
  • Use basic and advanced airport inspection devices, including inclinometers, levels, prisms, and measuring wheels, in addition to uncrewed aerial systems, to collect actionable data aimed at improving the safety and efficiency of Michigan’s general aviation airports and heliports.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Experience
Five years of professional experience as an aviation specialist, airplane pilot, air traffic controller, certified flight instructor, airport manager, aviation consultant, or professional experience equivalent to aviation safety, training, education, inspection or airport planning; three years of professional experience equivalent to an Aviation Specialist P11; two years equivalent to an Aviation Specialist 12; or, one year equivalent to an Aviation Manager 13.

Alternate Education and Experience

Four years of full-time experience as a certified flight instructor, airport manager, aviation consultant, airplane pilot, or air traffic controller; or, experience equivalent to aviation safety, training, education and inspection, or airport planning may be substituted for the education (bachelor's degree) requirement. This is in addition to the experience requirements.

Additional Requirements and Information

To be considered for this position you must: 

  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilots License (Preferred) and/or FAA Private Pilot License or higher (Preferred) 
  • If applicable, attach a copy of your official college transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation with your application. for the State of Michigan (SOM) definition of an Official College Transcript. Applicants who possess foreign degrees must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents.
