PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Aviation Safety Manager is a senior person identified by the Accountable Manager, in conjunction with Group Air Support input. The Aviation Safety Manager’s contractual oversight has been granted to ensure that all activity undertaken by the Wilderness Air is carried out in accordance with the Flight Operations Manual and Safety Management System in terms of the applicable requirements prescribed by the Civil Aviation Authority and Wilderness Air’s Air Operator Certificate and Air Service Licenses.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure in a general manner that the air service operates safely and reliably.
  • Ensure that the operator complies with the provisions of regulations in terms of safety.
  • Ensure that the Safety Plan is established and maintained. As required from time to time, effect all amendments, updates or changes to the Safety Plan and to all controlled copies thereof.
  • Identify, record and report any aviation safety-related problem to the Accountable Manager.
  • Represent and lead the operator’s response team in the event that an accident occurs, and ensure efficient and professional interaction with the relevant authority.
  • Complete all safety reports submitted by the aircrew and, where deemed necessary, ensure that corrective actions or measures are taken. In addition, to ensure that the relevant authority be advised, or be involved in those incidents requiring a higher level of involvement or where the nature thereof is deemed serious.
  • Develop and promote a safety culture amongst the staff of the operator.
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Recognised Flight Safety Certificate including Safety Management System.
  • Recognised Quality Assurance Management Aviation Certificate inclusive of Aviation Auditing is desirable
  • Broad operational knowledge and experience in the function of the organization including: training management, aircraft operations, air traffic management, aerodrome operations and maintenance organization management.
  • At least 6 years’ experience in the aviation sector
  • Experience in multi-national and multi-cultural environments
  • Reasonable period of management of an air service company with a fleet of two or more different aircraft types.
  • Reasonable understanding of an air service company within a large corporate group
  • Strong understanding of aviation risk and liability management.

  • Good organisational, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Good Listening Skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Sound knowledge of safety management principles and practices
  • Ability to relate to all levels, inside and outside the organisation
  • Ability to work independently and use own initiative to make informed decisions
  • Good leadership skills and an authoritative approach
  • Computer literacy: MS Word, Excel and Outlook as minimum
  • Must be task oriented
  • High integrity and ability to keep confidential information
  • Worthy of respect from peers and management
