The Aviation Safety Specialist will support the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, ensuring safety compliance, hazard prevention, and adherence to OSHA standards. This role involves conducting inspections, providing training, and implementing safety protocols to maintain a safe and efficient working environment for personnel and operations involving Coast Guard aviation assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Safety Inspections:

    • Plan, schedule, and conduct routine inspections to identify workplace hazards, including environmental conditions, equipment operations, and work practices.
    • Review equipment, building plans, and construction designs to ensure compliance with safety regulations under OSHA 29 CFR Parts 1910 and 1926.
  2. Compliance and Risk Mitigation:

    • Apply knowledge of OSHA standards, fire protection codes, and safety requirements for hazardous materials, including compressed gasses, radiological, biological, and chemical hazards.
    • Evaluate construction or facility modifications to ensure compliance and minimize risks.
  3. Accident Investigation and Reporting:

    • Investigate and analyze military and civilian accidents to determine causes and contributing factors.
    • Prepare detailed evaluation reports with findings, statistics, and recommendations for preventative measures.
  4. Safety Training:

    • Provide safety-related education and training to supervisors, leaders, and employees, covering ISO 45001 and OSHA 18001 standards.
    • Conduct government-sponsored onsite training sessions to enhance safety awareness and compliance.
  5. Policy Development and Support:

    • Develop and maintain safety and occupational health policies, ensuring adherence to updated standards.
    • Provide safety-related guidance and support to USCG Product Lines and Divisions.
  6. Meeting and Collaboration:

    • Attend safety meetings, research standards, and provide responses to safety-related inquiries.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to address safety concerns and implement effective controls.

Impact:

The Aviation Safety Specialist ensures a safe working environment at the USCG Aviation Logistics Center, directly contributing to the safety and efficiency of operations involving critical aviation assets. Through training, inspections, and compliance enforcement, this role supports the mission of maintaining a safe and effective workplace for Coast Guard personnel.



Requirements

Education:
  • Required: Completion of the OSHA 30-hour general industry course or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Safety, Environmental Health, Occupational Health).
Experience:
  • Minimum:
    • 5 years of experience applying federal OSHA regulations and standards, specifically:
      • OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry Standards).
      • OSHA 29 CFR 1926 (Construction Standards).
    • 5 years of experience working with aircraft, aircraft support systems, and safety protocols in an aviation depot-level maintenance facility.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience in ergonomics/assessment in an industrial environment.
Skills and Knowledge:
  1. Safety Standards Expertise:

    • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and standards, particularly related to industrial hazards.
    • Familiarity with consensus standards, including:
      • ANSI (American National Standards Institute).
      • NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).
      • ASTM (American Standard Test Method).
  2. Technical and Analytical Skills:

    • Ability to apply safety standards and fire protection codes to identify hazards and implement solutions.
    • Strong root cause analysis skills for investigating accidents and developing preventive measures.
  3. Systems and Tools:

    • Knowledge of ISO 45001 and OSHA 18001 Safety Management Systems.
    • Proficiency in maintaining safety records, conducting inspections, and using safety management tools.
  4. Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to perform physical activities related to inspections, including walking, climbing, bending, crouching, stretching, and reaching.
    • Capability to inspect and operate work-related industrial equipment.
  5. Communication and Training:

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and delivering training sessions.
    • Ability to collaborate with teams effectively and stakeholders to address safety concerns.
Other Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency, as required by federal regulations.
  • Ability to pass a Public Trust background investigation.
