POSITION DESCRIPTION: Avionics Technician 

  

Summary: Performs maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft avionics components.               

 

 ACCOUNTABILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Perform complex technical assignments involving electronic troubleshooting.
  • Maintain, calibrate, configure, monitor, test, troubleshoot, install and repair avionic components, process controls, power supplies and electrical systems.
  • Trouble-shooting to logically solve instrumentation system problems and determine corrective action.
  • Install parts and units using hand tools, minor power tools, test instruments, soldering, connectors & pins, terminals and lugs.
  • Adjust, repair, or replace faulty components of test setups and equipment.
  • Use necessary instrumentation of test stands to test, repair and OH wiring power generation (high power) components. 
  • Perform continuity checks, locate and correct wiring errors using measuring instruments such as ohmmeters and sequential continuity checkers.
  • Read and interpret planning documents, schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, drawings, manuals, blueprints and engineering sketches.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective team work environment and collaborate with design engineers to troubleshoot failures.

EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED BY JOB: Associate’s Degree in Instrumentation or Technician/Vocational Certificate in  Control Technology, Electrical Systems, or other related field (minimum of 3 years of experience working with Controls or Electrical Systems will be considered in lieu of degree) 

 

 

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Basic Qualifications: A minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Bench or Avionics Technician with any of the following instrumentation: Resistance Temperature Devices (RTDs), Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzer

 Preferred Skills and Experience:

-In order of importance

  • Basic knowledge of Wheatstone bridge theory, ability to apply ohms law and an understanding of Transformer Rectifier, Frequency Converters, Battery Chargers and AC/DC Load Banks.
  • Knowledge of: AC/DC electronics, AC-DC,DC/AC converters,  High Power Electronics and Three Phase inputs.
  • Operational knowledge of an oscilloscope & multi-meter, soldering wires & connectors, operation of various crimping tools, wire stripping, continuity testing, pinning out a military type connector, routing & tie wrapping cables, drilling & tapping holes, and building junction boxes.
  • Knowledge in signal conditioning concepts for various types of sensors, to include the following: Thermocouple Types K, S, and E; TC bonding concepts: resistance weld on and adhesive bond on types;   Cold junction compensation concepts
  • Intermediate skill level using Windows Operating Systems  
  • Demonstrated capabilities in the development of comprehensive project plans  

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Effective use of the English language, both oral and written, to communicate information to others. Ability to read, write, comprehend and interpret instructions and documents, correspondence, and memos.  

 

REASONING AND PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, including some requiring fine manipulation (e.g. hair pins and small springs), handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; operate a computer and reach with hands and arms; sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific and/or correctable vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
