The Flight Systems Safety Engineer will support the Safety and Mission Assurance Services (SMAS) contract at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and/or evaluate Safety Plans for both assigned in-house and contracted tasks in accordance with the project lifecycle, as applicable, to assure compliance with applicable Agency, Center, and Program safety requirements.
- Develop and/or evaluate hazard analyses for both in-house and contracted design and development projects to ensure that: (1) all hazards are identified, and the associated risks properly characterized; (2) hazard controls satisfy safety requirements and mitigate safety risks; and (3) safety verification requirements are clearly identified, including the clear definition of verification pass/fail criteria.
- Evaluate operating procedures, plans, and activities with increased risk to ensure safety compliance and mitigate hazards.
- Perform safety assessments of any issues for assigned programs and projects.
- Perform or assess trade studies relative to design, development, operation, or mission events for assigned in-house and contracted projects, to ensure compliance with safety requirements and to ensure safety risks are identified, characterized, and mitigated.
- Assess proposed changes, deviations, and waivers to program and project documentation to ensure compliance with safety requirements. This assessment includes evaluation of the impacts to safety and hazard analyses and the effects on program or project risk.
- Assess program or project documentation (e.g., System Requirements Document, Contract End Item, Requirements Verification Compliance procedures, and other applicable data) to ensure that all safety requirements are addressed in compliance with Government requirements. This support will be provided for all mission phases (i.e., design, development, verification, operations, post flight analysis, and sustaining engineering.).
- Assess, and support development of program or project verification plans and verification requirements (e.g., Verification Plans, Requirements Verification Compliance (RVC) documents) to ensure all safety verification requirements are properly
- Assess test and operating procedures to assure compliance with safety controls and safety verification requirements.
- Assess or generate safety verification compliance data to ensure it clearly demonstrates compliance with the safety verification requirements and parent safety requirement.
- Support the tracking of safety verifications in accordance with program/project/activity documentation by interning safety verification into the prescribed system(s), updating that system(s) as status change, and reporting status to the program/project/activity and SMA Leadership as prescribed by NASA.
- Develop and maintain metrics of assigned programs and projects.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering, or a related field.
- Must have 7+ years of recent and related work experience.
- Able to work in a matrix-oriented organization with minimum to no supervision.
- Skilled in working with both contractor and NASA senior level engineering and Program/Project Managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex safety and engineering issues in an understandable and diplomatic manner.
- Ability to develop fault tree analysis, logic trees, risk definition and mitigation analyses, hazard analysis and trending and data searches.
DESIRED:
- Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes and procedures is highly desired.
- Experience with Computer Aided Fault Tree Analysis (CAFTA) Software.
- Experience in assessing preliminary engineering studies, feasibility studies, building/equipment specifications.
- Knowledge of government safety programs, hazardous operations readiness reviews (e.g., MWI 8715.17).
- Familiarity with documenting evaluations, inspections, and non-compliances in systems like SafeSuite or other government-designated databases.
- Ability to participate effectively in multidisciplinary safety reviews (e.g., ORR, SRT, TRR) and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.
WORK LOCATION:
- This position is located onsite.
- This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off.
- This position may require some travel.
