Brief Description of Duties


The Aviation Maintenance Technology Instructor serves as a faculty member for the four-semester FAA Aviation Maintenance Technology Certification program. The individual reports to the Division Director for Math, IT and Engineering. All courses are held at the Airport location, 2801 Thomas Ave Hangar #2, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington, DC 20001. However, there may be times the individual could be expected to teach at another location. This is a regular, full-time position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaches course(s) as assigned by Program Director; Must be available to teach during the day M-F; occasional weekend work may be necessary to support student success. Evening courses may be offered in the future
  • Conducts a minimum of five office hours per week
  • Teaches related courses and maintains student records in compliance with Community College and FAA rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Engages in activities that facilitate student achievement of learning outcomes, such as ongoing feedback, and consultation as needed
  • Collaborates with appropriate Student Services personnel to address perceived student issues, which may require special attention
  • Attends scheduled divisional, discipline, and faculty meetings, as required and Serves on at least one College-wide committee
  • Assists with ensuring tools, engines, and other instructional materials are in working order and well maintained; assists with required repairs
  • Participates in curriculum development and revision to ensure course material is up-to date and reflects the current state of the aviation industry, per FAA standards
  • Assists with ensuring Hangar #2 facilities are cleaned and well-maintained
  • Familiarity with and conducts assessment of student learning outcomes at both course and program levels, according to the standards of the FAA, the Community College, and Middle States Commission on Higher Education
  • Assists with the advising of student majors and with career counseling
  • Answers student inquiries (emails and voice mail messages) in a timely manner
  • Ensures students conduct themselves in a safe and courteous manner adhering to the student code of conduct at all times

Minimum Job Requirements

  • The individual must hold a current FAA Mechanic Certificate with both Airframe and Powerplant ratings for at least the three (3) year period immediately preceding appointment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in this or a related field is preferred, but not required.
  • At least three or more years of experience teaching the subject matter is preferable.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge in maintenance fundamentals, aviation materials, electrical systems, engine theory and applications, aircraft metallic structures, systems and components, and other related topics.
  • Must also demonstrate familiarity with FAA regulations, particularly those associated with 14 CFR Part 147.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
