Position: Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Bournemouth Airport OR Gloucestershire Airport OR Farnborough Airport

(Hybrid working can be agreed, you must be within a commutable distance to one of the 3 airports listed)

Working Hours: 40 Hours per week – Flexible hours

Overtime available paid at time and a half.

Job Type: Fixed Term Contract - 8-12 months, could lead to a permanent role

We have an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic design team at Gama Aviation. You must be within a commutable distance to one of our listed sites; Bournemouth, Gloucestershire or Farnborough. Hybrid working options available, as well as flexible hours.


The preferred candidates will have experience in Part 21J to integrate into our design team producing mechanical design data for aircraft modifications and repairs.


You will have a great deal of responsibility with endless opportunity for impact and freedom for initiatives.


Gama’s design office has a large scope of approval, covering the following aircraft types:

• CS-23 – Normal, Utility, Aerobatic and Commuter Aeroplanes

• CS-25 – Large Aeroplanes

• CS-27 – Small Rotorcraft

• CS-29 – Large Rotorcraft

• Various military aeroplanes and rotorcraft


The Design Office holds the following regulatory approvals:

• Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Part 21J Design Organisation Approval (DOA)

• Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) A8-21 BCAR Design Organisation Approval

• Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Design Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS)

Responsibilities:

  • Creation of design schemes and proposals to meet customer and regulatory requirements
  • Preparation of CAD models and drawings using Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD
  • Production of detailed mechanical designs, including the specification of:
    • Fabrication, manufacture, and assembly processes
    • Materials
    • Surface treatments
    • Fasteners and hardware
  • Liaison with the production and installation departments to resolve design queries
  • Carrying out technical surveys and 3D scanning on aircraft to gather required data
  • Preparation of design documentation
  • Maintaining an awareness of current aeronautical practices / issues
  • Continued professional development: attending training courses, seminars, etc
  • Representing the DOA to customers and Authorities within the mechanical design area of expertise

Skills, Qualifications and Experience required:


Essential

  • Experience working on EASA / CAA Part 21J Design work
  • Preferred backgrounds include; Sheet metal structures, Machined components, Basic mechanism design, Cabin interiors, Cabin monuments, Avionics installations and HEMS / Air Ambulance
  • Team player with the ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to carry out technical surveys on customer aircraft to gather sketches, dimensions and photographs, and work from existing design data were available to enable creation of the designs to meet customer requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be proficient in creating models and drafting drawings in keeping with BS 8888 and company standards for installations, assemblies, and parts.
  • Reliability and willingness to take responsibility for own tasks

Advantageous

  • Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent
  • Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Autodesk Inventor experience preferred but experience in other 3D packages considered.
