Job Summary

Oversees field operations of the Road and Bridge crew, ensuring compliance with safety protocols to maintain a secure and efficient work site. Assists with prioritizing and assigning tasks to personnel while supporting overall operational effectiveness.  

Job Responsibilities

• Oversees field operations of the Road and Bridge crew to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, safety procedures and environmental considerations. 

• Assists with prioritizing tasks and assigning personnel to optimize workflow and efficiency.  

• Oversees the Road and Bridge safety and training program, trains apprentice personnel in the safe operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, personal protective equipment, and other tools.  

• Supervises and participates in the operation of heavy machinery and maintenance work; assists with equipment repairs; responds to emergency situations. 

• Promotes teamwork and effective communication among crew members to ensure efficient project completion and a safe work environment. 

• Provides feedback to management regarding employee performance. 

• Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

• 3+ years experience at a senior-level in department or function operating heavy machinery in a construction or maintenance environment.

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

• ICS 100, 200, 300, Flagger, and CPR certifications required within one year of hire.

• Must possess a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (Class B with Tanker Endorsement).

• Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

• Majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather conditions and dangerous machinery and requires moderate physical exertion including repetitive lifting and other manual labor. 

• May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays depending on weather conditions.
