Position: Senior/Principal Hardware System Engineer – Avionics & Mission Systems

Incomar is an aerospace and defence company based in Centurion, South Africa. We are continuously
expanding our specialised product development and flight operations capabilities. The group was
established in South Africa in 1999, with its origins in military aircraft weapons and avionics integration and
flight testing. The company is well established in the local and international industry, with a strong capability
in several specialist areas, including:
• Systems Design, Development, and Integration.
• System Testing on a range of platforms / products.
• Product Development.
• Flight Test Execution and Support.
Incomar is looking for a motivated individual to take a lead role in the hardware and firmware development
aspects related to avionics and mission computing platforms. This includes taking technical responsibility of
all hardware, firmware, electrical and electronic aspects on the allocated avionic or mission computing
modules; including Hardware System Engineering activities as well as overseeing all electronic hardware,
PCB, electrical, firmware development and test and integration activities.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a relevant related tertiary qualification.
Required Skills and Experience:
• 5-10+ years of electronic hardware development experience (preferably in an airborne electronics environment).
• Electrical / electronic design, product development & qualification skills (functional &
• environmental).
• In-depth knowledge and experience in high-speed digital PCB design.
• Hardware testing, debugging and qualification skills.
• System & hardware integration engineering skills.
• Product development and system engineering skills involving all aspects of the "V" life cycle and the system
engineering management process.
• Proficient in requirements management (experience with Cradle/Jama/Doors preferable, but not mandatory).
• Configuration and product lifecycle management skills.
• Proficient in required design & simulation packages (e.g. Altium, Solidworks Electrical, Ansys, MATLAB, LT-SPICE,
MS-Visio).
• Proficient in MS Office.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
• Military, Defence Industry and/or Avionics development experience preferable.
• Experienced in PCB development using Altium Designer.
• High-speed PCB simulation.
• Knowledge or experience in the RTCA DO-254 design process.
• Knowledge or experience in hardware environmental qualification to military and civilian standards (RTCA DO-160,
MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, etc).
• Experience in electronic thermal management & simulation.
• Experience in avionics LRU design & development.
• Knowledge or experience in Software and/or Firmware development.
• System safety engineering skills.
• Logistical support engineering skills.
• Exposure to software version control tools.
• Experience in project/team management is preferable.
Responsibilities:
• Performing Hardware System Engineering activities on the allocated avionics or mission computing systems and
sub-systems.
• Taking technical ownership of all hardware and firmware development activities on the allocated avionics or
mission computing systems and sub-systems.
• Overseeing hardware item design activities, including firmware, electrical, electronic, mechanical and thermal
design aspects.
• Conducting hardware development according to the "V" product development life cycle and system engineering
management process.
• Writing and maintaining specifications related to firmware / electrical / electronic / sub-system development
activities.
• Writing and maintaining electrical / electronic / sub-system test and verification documentation.
• Writing and maintaining system and sub-system hardware interface documentation.
• Perform, execute and document electrical / electronic / sub-system compliance, verification, validation and
qualification activities.
• Configuration and version management of electrical / electronic system, sub-system and item designs.
• Simulation, data analysis and report writing applicable to allocated tasks.
• Ensuring that customer requirements and applicable standards are met.
• Assisting with cost and time estimates for engineering tasks/projects.
• Planning and executing tasks within agreed to budgets and timescales.
• Contribute towards the improvement and elaboration of hardware design and development processes & tools.
• Apply sound ethical principles.
